As parents, it is crucial to speak with our children regarding the dangers of pornography. But, this is not a one-time thing; the conversation must be ongoing. To truly protect our kids against this evil plaguing our society, we need to get ahead of it before the infection sets in. We must be willing to talk to our children before they are exposed to pornography. If we do not, the consequences can be dire.

If we are not willing to teach our children how to navigate the digital world and how to combat porn when they encounter it, they will be forced to find their own path through the temptations and the turmoil. Depending how young they are at exposure, it can be extremely difficult for a small child to cope with or make sense of the illicit material. What is more, boys and girls are getting exposed at an increasingly younger age – first contact usually occurs between the ages of 11 and 13 but can happen much earlier.

Pornography unleashed on an unsuspecting, juvenile mind can take a tremendous toll. It can lead to difficulties in communication, create unbearable feelings of isolation, and contribute to other symptoms of poor emotional health. It can distort knowledge of intercourse and what is considered “normal” sexual behavior. It can disorder otherwise healthy desires towards immoral and impure inclinations. It can alter how the opposite sex is perceived and sow seeds of distrust in relationships. It can limit sexual organs from functioning as they were intended. It can quickly and easily become addictive and obsessive. Overall, porn has devastating impacts on the wellbeing of those who are consumed by it.

As guardians and shepherds of our kids, we must be willing to walk with them on their journey through this perilous realm. It is important that we speak the truth to them as they fight the battle that is unceasingly waged by our hyper-sexualized culture. We must endeavor to equip them with the knowledge, the tools, and the trust in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to combat the lies of pornography. We must fight to save their souls. We must help them embrace a life of faith and holy desire and teach them to remain steadfast before a secular society that is frantically steering them towards a life of selfishness and immorality.

Lastly, don’t be naïve in thinking that this doesn’t affect your community, your family, or your child. This affects all of us – the technology at our fingertips and the steady tide of societal “tolerance” have made sure of that. If you believe your child is old enough, sit them down and talk with them today about the reality of porn consumption and masturbation and the effects these can have on their body, mind, and soul, as well as their present and future relationships. Don’t wait until it is too late. Show them the way of love and don’t leave them to tread alone through the trenches of lust.
