You’re not alone; just ask a priest! The most common sins they hear during confession are porn use and masturbation. The problem of porn is so widespread that even the most devout Catholics receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation are caught in its snare.

Sins of a sexual nature can induce significant feelings of shame and disgust. These powerful emotions can make it hard to face up to our failures as we’d rather avoid the painful reminders. If we have been absent for a long time, the only way to drag ourselves into the confessional booth is to swallow our pride.

If you are struggling to bring yourself to Reconciliation, pray for the wisdom and the courage to overcome this reluctance. Once you finally get there, in the midst of seeking forgiveness, remember that you are confessing your sins to God. It can be very helpful to close your eyes and speak directly to the Father as if you forgot the other father was even in the room.

When you confess these sins for the first time, it’s ok to start by sitting behind the privacy screen. It’s not easy to divulge these dark, inner secrets we hide from the world. The longer the sins have existed, the harder it will be to dig them up. But as you grow more comfortable with your confessor, and when you find the courage in your heart, throw your pride aside completely and sit face-to-face with the priest – this can be the most freeing way to receive God’s grace in the Sacrament.

When you have finally gotten this sin off your chest, enjoy the beauty of the Sacrament and the graces that are bestowed upon you. Most of all, embrace the freedom from this sin that the Sacrament can finally help you achieve!
